Is fluoride varnish safe for children? What parents should know

Dr. Bhuvanesswari S., MDSPediatric & Preventive Dentistry · 13 October 2026

Fluoride varnish is a preventive treatment that has been used in paediatric dentistry for over 40 years. Despite its wide use, many parents have questions — and sometimes concerns — about fluoride. This guide explains what fluoride varnish actually is, what the evidence shows, and how Dr. Bhuvanesswari approaches its use at Chutti's.

What is fluoride varnish?

Fluoride varnish is a concentrated fluoride preparation — typically 5% sodium fluoride — in a sticky base that is painted directly onto the tooth surfaces using a small brush. It hardens on contact with saliva within seconds and slowly releases fluoride into the tooth surface over the following hours.

The varnish is applied in very small amounts — a single dose for a child typically contains far less fluoride than a pea-sized amount of standard children's toothpaste. It is applied in clinic, takes about two minutes, and the child can eat and drink soft foods normally shortly after.

What does it do?

Fluoride works by two main mechanisms:

  • It helps remineralise areas of early enamel damage — the process by which minerals lost through acid attack are replaced before a full cavity forms.
  • It makes the outer layer of enamel more resistant to future acid attacks from the bacteria that cause cavities.

Varnish delivers a higher, more targeted dose of fluoride directly to the tooth surface than brushing alone can achieve, and the slow release means the teeth benefit for longer.

What the evidence says

Fluoride varnish is one of the most extensively studied interventions in paediatric dentistry. A Cochrane systematic review of 22 trials (Marinho et al., 2013) found that fluoride varnish applications significantly reduce cavities in both baby and permanent teeth compared to placebo or no treatment.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends fluoride varnish application for all children according to their cavity-risk level — as frequently as every three months for high-risk children, and less frequently for lower-risk ones. The World Health Organisation and the British Society of Paediatric Dentistry make similar recommendations.

The doses used in clinical application are designed to be effective at the tooth surface while remaining within established safe limits for children of all ages.

How Dr. Bhuvanesswari uses it at Chutti's

Fluoride varnish at Chutti's is not applied to every child at every visit as a routine. Dr. Bhuvanesswari uses the Caries-Risk Assessment (CRA) conducted at each check-up to determine whether fluoride varnish is indicated, how frequently, and in what concentration. The plan is adjusted as the child grows and their risk profile changes.

Parents are always told in advance when fluoride varnish is being applied, and the application is explained to the child in age-appropriate terms before it is done.

If you have specific concerns or questions about fluoride for your child, bring them to the appointment — we are happy to discuss the evidence and the specific plan for your child.
