Preventive & Early Dental Care

The best dental treatment is the one your child never needs. Starting early — ideally before the first birthday — means we can keep teeth healthy from the beginning, not just repair them when something goes wrong.

For parents

When might my child need this?

Common situations — not a diagnosis. We will advise after seeing your child.

  • Your baby’s first tooth has appeared, or the first birthday is coming up
  • Your child has never had a dental check-up, at any age
  • You would like to know how likely your child is to get cavities
  • Permanent back teeth are coming through and you are asking about sealants

The visit

What happens at Chutti’s?

  1. 1

A relaxed hello, with time for your child to settle

  2. 2

A gentle check of teeth, gums and how they are developing

  3. 3

A cavity-risk check, known as Caries-Risk Assessment (CRA)

  4. 4

Fluoride or sealants, if your child needs them

  5. 5

A prevention plan, and the next visit timed to your child’s risk

Every child is different, so the visit is adapted to your child.

In detail

Treatments explained

What each treatment is, why it matters, and what to expect.

Infant oral-health assessment

Birth – 12 months

A gentle check of your baby's mouth, gums and any emerging teeth, along with guidance on feeding, cleaning and what to expect as more teeth come through.

Why it matters
The first year sets the foundation. Habits like night feeds, how you clean new teeth and your baby's fluoride exposure all shape their cavity risk before they even have a full mouth of teeth.
What to expect
Your baby can stay on your lap throughout. The visit is brief and unhurried — mostly a look and a chat with you about what you're seeing at home.

First dental visit and dental home setup

By the first birthday

The AAPD recommends a dental visit by the first birthday or within six months of the first tooth. This visit sets up your child's dental home — one practice, one team, consistent care across all of childhood.

Why it matters
Children who visit the dentist early are less likely to need complex treatment later. A dental home means your child is never starting over somewhere new when something goes wrong.
What to expect
A relaxed introduction, a gentle check, and a clear plan for how often to come back based on your child's individual risk.

Cavity-risk check (Caries-Risk Assessment, CRA)

All ages

A structured look at how likely your child is to develop cavities, based on their age, teeth, brushing habits, diet, fluoride use, and medical or developmental factors. Every child's risk is different, so every prevention plan is different.

Why it matters
A child who eats well, brushes well and has naturally strong enamel needs a different plan than one with a history of cavities. The CRA makes the plan specific rather than generic.
What to expect
A short assessment built into the check-up. We go through the findings with you and explain exactly what the plan covers.

Fluoride application to strengthen enamel

All ages, frequency based on cavity risk

A professional fluoride varnish or gel applied to the teeth at the check-up. Quick and comfortable — it sets in a few minutes.

Why it matters
Fluoride strengthens tooth enamel and makes it more resistant to the acids that cause cavities. Professional application gives higher concentration than toothpaste alone, especially useful for children at higher risk.
What to expect
Done in the same visit as the check-up. No special preparation needed; your child can eat and drink normally after a short wait.

Protective coating on back teeth (pit-and-fissure sealants)

Usually ages 6–14, as permanent molars come through

A thin protective coating applied to the grooves on the biting surface of the back teeth. The grooves are natural traps for food and bacteria; the sealant seals them off.

Why it matters
Most cavities in children form in these grooves. Sealants reduce that risk significantly without removing any tooth structure.
What to expect
Quick, with no local anaesthesia needed. The tooth is cleaned, the sealant is applied and set with a small light, and it's done.

How we make it easier for children

  • On your lap

Very young children can sit on a parent’s lap for the visit.

  • Parents in the room

You are welcome to stay with your child throughout.

  • Explained first

Every step is explained to you and your child before anything is done.

Questions

What parents often ask

By the first birthday, or within six months of the first tooth appearing — whichever comes first. Earlier is better, even if everything looks fine. Children who start early are less anxious about dental visits and less likely to need complex treatment later.
Not at all. Older children who have never seen a dentist are welcome at any age. The first visit will include a gentle check, a cavity-risk assessment, and a catch-up plan. There is no judgement — only a plan for what to do from here.
Professional fluoride application uses a higher concentration than toothpaste and is applied directly to the teeth, where it stays. For children at moderate or higher cavity risk, it makes a real difference on top of daily brushing.
