Sleep Dentistry & Full Mouth Rehabilitation

For children who need more support than behaviour guidance or laughing gas alone — conscious sedation in-house, and full mouth rehabilitation under general anaesthesia at a hospital for the most complex cases.

General anaesthesia is considered only for selected cases where it is clinically indicated, and is carried out at a hospital.

For parents

When might my child need this?

Common situations — not a diagnosis. We will advise after seeing your child.

  • Laughing gas alone has not been enough for your child
  • Extensive dental treatment is needed
  • Your child’s age, anxiety, or medical or developmental needs make several appointments very difficult

In detail

Treatments explained

What each treatment is, why it matters, and what to expect.

Conscious sedation — in-house, deeper calm

Assessed individually based on clinical need

A deeper level of sedation than laughing gas, using a sedation machine at the clinic. Your child is relaxed and drowsy throughout but remains awake and able to respond. Used when laughing gas alone is not enough — for longer procedures, high dental anxiety, or where a calm, still state makes treatment safer.

Why it matters
Some children and some procedures need more than laughing gas can offer. Conscious sedation can allow treatment to be completed calmly at the clinic, without a hospital visit.
What to expect
A thorough clinical assessment comes first. Dr. Bhuvanesswari and her team explain whether conscious sedation is the right choice, what the session involves, how to prepare your child, and the specific guidelines on eating and drinking beforehand. A recovery period at the clinic follows before going home.

Please note: Your child stays awake and responsive throughout. This is not general anaesthesia — the effects are reversible and wear off during the clinic recovery period.

Full mouth rehabilitation under general anaesthesia (GA)

Assessed individually; usually young children or children with complex needs

For children with extensive dental problems who cannot cooperate with treatment even with sedation — all necessary dental work is completed in a single session under general anaesthesia at a hospital. Dr. Bhuvanesswari and her team carry out the dental treatment while an anaesthesiologist manages the anaesthesia.

Why it matters
Some children — because of very young age, severe dental anxiety, medical needs, or developmental conditions — cannot safely or comfortably manage multiple dental appointments. Completing everything in one visit under GA avoids repeated distress and gives the child a completely fresh start with their dental health.
What to expect
A dedicated consultation to assess whether full mouth rehab under GA is the right approach. Dr. Bhuvanesswari and her team go through the full treatment plan with you, explain exactly what will happen, coordinate with the hospital, and are with your child throughout the procedure.

Please note: General anaesthesia carries medical risks that are discussed in full at the consultation. The decision is made carefully and only when it is the best clinical option for the child.

Questions

What parents often ask

Laughing gas (nitrous oxide) is breathed through a nose mask — your child stays fully awake and relaxed, and the effect wears off in minutes. Conscious sedation goes deeper: your child is drowsy and very calm but still awake and responsive, using a sedation machine at the clinic. General anaesthesia (GA) means your child is completely unconscious; it is carried out at a hospital with an anaesthesiologist. Dr. Bhuvanesswari and her team use the lightest option that allows comfortable treatment for your child's specific situation.
Dr. Bhuvanesswari and her team assess each child individually. Most children are managed well with behaviour guidance and laughing gas. Conscious sedation is considered when a child's anxiety or the complexity of treatment means laughing gas is not enough. GA is reserved for the most complex cases — extensive dental needs that cannot be safely treated in stages, or children who cannot cooperate even with sedation. They will explain their reasoning and discuss the options with you at the consultation.
Dr. Bhuvanesswari and her team evaluate each case individually and suggest conscious sedation only when it is appropriate for your child. The team follows clinical protocols for patient selection, monitoring during the procedure, and recovery time. We will go through the guidelines with you, including what your child should eat and drink before the appointment.
