Sports Dentistry & Mouth Protection

Sports and active play are part of childhood. Protecting your child's teeth during sport — and knowing what to do when an injury happens — is part of complete dental care.

In detail

Treatments explained

What each treatment is, why it matters, and what to expect.

Sports trauma prevention — counselling and assessment

All ages

A check of your child's teeth, bite and gum structure to assess their risk of dental injury during sport or active play, along with guidance on how to protect them. For children who play contact sport or are active at any age, knowing the risk and taking simple steps can prevent injuries that are painful, expensive and sometimes irreversible.

Why it matters
Dental injuries are among the most common sport-related injuries in children. A knocked-out, chipped or fractured tooth can need treatment that lasts years — and most of these injuries are preventable.
What to expect
A straightforward assessment as part of a routine check-up or a dedicated appointment. We will tell you what we see and what protection makes sense for your child's sport and dental situation.

Custom-fitted mouth guards

All ages

A mouth guard made from an impression of your child's own teeth — fitted precisely to their mouth, not an off-the-shelf tray. It protects the teeth, lips, gums and jaw during contact sport and high-impact activity.

Why it matters
Custom mouth guards fit properly, stay in place, and are far more comfortable than boil-and-bite guards from a sports shop. Children who can breathe and speak easily in a guard are the ones who actually wear it.
What to expect
An impression is taken at one appointment; the guard is ready at the next. We will advise on how to care for it and when to replace it as your child grows and their teeth change.

Dental injury management

All ages

Assessment and treatment of dental injuries from sport or active play — a chipped tooth, a tooth pushed out of position, or a tooth knocked out completely. Quick action and the right first-aid steps can make a significant difference to the outcome.

Questions

What parents often ask

Any child who plays contact sport — cricket, football, basketball, martial arts, cycling, gymnastics — benefits from a mouth guard. Even sports that seem low-risk can involve falls or collisions. A custom-fitted guard is the most effective option and the most likely to be worn consistently.
Over-the-counter boil-and-bite guards offer some protection, but they fit poorly, are uncomfortable, and children often take them out during play. A custom guard made from your child's own teeth fits properly, stays in place, and is much more comfortable. For children playing sport regularly, a custom guard is worth it.
If it is a permanent tooth: pick it up by the crown (not the root), do not scrub it, store it in cold milk or ask your child to hold it gently between the cheek and gum, and come immediately. If it is a baby tooth: do not put it back in — apply gentle pressure if the gum is bleeding and WhatsApp or call for a same-day appointment. See the Dental Injuries page for full first-aid steps.
